Blenheim blow out!!
June 9, 2011
BLENHEIM PALACE TRIATHLON – JUNE 2011
At the weekend was our annual Team Ichiban race and this year was Blenheim Palace. The team consists of friends from all over the world including London, Japan and the most exotic…..Frome!
We all met up on the Saturday at Blenheim for a lunch then a gentle ride to keep the legs fresh for race day, after around 10 mins of riding on unfamiliar territory I hit the worlds biggest pothole and blew out one of my tubs on my race bike. This was a little bit of a disaster because the only way to fix a tub is to have a spare….which I didn’t!!! So, I had to walk barefoot carrying my bike for around 30 mins back to Blenheim…..not exactly how I thought my day would end up!!
Race day was soon upon as….with my wheels fixed and ready to race (big thanks to Jon Allen) the team was ready to go head to head in a very beautiful setting. We had a very leisurely start at 11.30a.m in the Blenheim Palace lake. I had a slow start from the gun but soon found my pace and rhythm with fellow team members next to me the whole way on the swim (Jenson and Fraser) and (tom) hot on my heels I knew this was going to be a tough day, especially as Brad exited the water first. From the lake was a 400m run up a hill where I caught Brad on the climb and made a slick transition onto the 3 lap bike. The ride was rolling with some steep short climbs along route around the grounds of the Palace, once on the bike you are met with plenty of other triathletes pushing for position, so the bike was a little hectic at times and by this point you have no idea who you are actually racing against! From the bike into a two lap run I felt pretty relaxed but slightly nervous as I had only had 8 days of training into this race due to a knee injury. The run course was challenging and I managed to overtake the leader of our wave on the second lap, I finished well and was happy that everything held together.
The results where very pleasing:
1st in age group
3rd overall – around 4000 competitors
A fantastic day with great team mates around……good times!

Training out of your comfort zone….why?

Training out of your comfort zone……Why?
Running specific speed sessions….
Running is a challenging sport which takes a lot of character and will power to consistently keep training 52 weeks of the year, especially with our unreliable weather in the UK. The statement I hear regularly from many runners is: “I want to run faster and beat my P.B”. This is because it’s human nature to be a little competitive with ourselves and each other to do the very best we can.
To achieve a personal best time at any level of running, it is important to have a structured training plan with specific achievable goals. Running many miles a week at the same pace is not the way to increase your speed, that’s a great way to learn how to run many miles at the same pace – but not improve your speed! The body is a very clever thing, through muscle memory the body can adapt to the stresses that we put our bodies through whilst running. It is important to keep the body ‘guessing’ and keep variety in your training! A specific unstructured speed session is a Fartleck session. These sessions are great because you are in charge of that session; you decide what pace you will run at and for how long….keeping the body on its toes!
Challenging yourself with a variety of speed sessions throughout your training will certainly improve your personal best times. Training with a specific, structured interval session the body will learn to deal with working at this intensity. Over time the body will adapt and you will be able to implement your new found speed as a continuous pace – especially on race day!
Good luck
Yours in sport
